How Do I Customize Instant Messaging Preferences?

To customize instant messaging preferences, perform the following tasks:

  1. Click General Preferences under Instant Messaging in the left navigation panel.

    The General Preferences tab appears in the central panel.

    The following options are available:

    • Status: Use this option to set your online status as idle or away after a specific duration of inactivity.

    • Alerts: Use this option to receive alerts of the online status of your contacts.

      You can receive alerts when your contacts are:

      • Available

      • Goes away

      • Goes offline

    • Groups: The Groups option enables you to specify the way the groups appear in your instant messenger pane. When you log in to Convergence, your contacts and groups are displayed in the right hand pane. By default, the groups are expanded and each user within a group is displayed under the group name.

      If you do not want the groups to be expanded, you can select the check box labelled Login with groups minimized. This option will minimize all contacts in the group.


      Note - To see the status or chat with users in a group, you must click on the arrow icon on the group name.


    • New Contact Requests: You can set preference for approving new contacts that add you as their instant messaging contacts. You can set a preference to either approve contacts automatically or request authorization before adding a contact.

  2. Click Save Preferences .
